At room temperature, calcium oxide is a white solid, fine crystalline. It has hygroscopic properties and rapidly combines with water to form calcium hydroxide, and this reaction is accompanied by heat release.

Calcium oxide is used in construction (as a mortar), metallurgy, glass and ceramic industry. In laboratories it is used, among others, in the process of obtaining ammonia and in the form of a dehydrating agent.
