Nitric acid
Name: Nitric acid
Synonyms: nitric acid
Chemical formula: HNO3
Application
Nitric acids, esters (eg nitroglycerin) and nitro compounds (e.g., trinitrotoluene) are obtained from nitric acid. All of them are oxidants, and they tend to have a violent and more or less explosive decomposition. Nitric acid is also used in analytical chemistry, where it is used to detect proteins in the xantoprotein reaction as well as in the pharmaceutical industry. It is used to clean metal surfaces, for example when washing food industry equipment in the CIP process.
In amateur conditions, nitric acid is suitable for etching printed circuits (it does not leave troublesome impurities, which accompany iron etching, and additionally nitric acid digest is much faster).
Nitric acid is used to obtain fertilizers, dyes, varnishes and plastics. It is used as a fuel oxidant (also hypergolic) - usually in the form of red, fuming nitric acid (obtained by adding 13-15% nitrogen nitroxide to white, fuming nitric acid) with the addition of (eg 0.6% hydrogen fluoride). Used, for example, in Soviet anti-aircraft missiles S-75 and S-200 to reduce the corrosive effect.
