Formalin is a water (about 35-40%) solution of formaldehyde (formaldehyde). Colorless liquid with an irritating sharp smell and taste. Formalin is stabilized with ethanol, which prevents polymerization.
Application
Formalin is used in many types of chemical industry, plastics and rubber, paper production and many others.
Concentrated is used to burn warts and cysts.
In an aqueous dilution of 1-2 percent used as an antiseptic, disinfectant and antiperspirant.
In addition, it is used for the preservation and storage of biological preparations, at a concentration of 3% for plant tissues, and 5% for anatomical animal preparations.
A few percent aqueous solutions of formalin are used in conservation for museology, eg for paintings containing protein substances in paints, and in former photography as a gelatin-reducing agent that forms the basis of photographic emulsion (both for films and papers).
Disinfecting with formalin
Formaldehyde solutions in a concentration of 1.5 - 2% can be used to disinfect surgical instruments.
However, a 10% solution can be used to disinfect footwear and socks, also at home.
This disinfection is generally performed in the therapy of recurrent fungal infections of the feet to prevent re-infection.
The process consists in placing a vessel with a formaldehyde solution together with the contaminated material in sealed foil packaging for 12-18 hours, after which the disinfected material should be ventilated and, if possible, washed.
Fixation of biological material
Formaldehyde solutions in a concentration of 3.5 - 4% (active substance) are one of the most commonly used fixatives of biological material.
The advantage of the formaldehyde solution is that it penetrates deep into the tissue quickly and perfectly maintains its structure.
In addition, the material thus fixed can then be preserved using other fixing substances.
It should be remembered that solutions of formaldehyde in a concentration below 3.5% do not stabilize the biological material in a proper way and may lead to its premature decomposition. To avoid problems with too low concentrations of formaldehyde solution, it is important to check the concentration of the active substance in the safety data sheet enclosed with the product.
