Sodium thiosulphate
Name: Sodium thiosulphate
Synonyms: thiosulphate = STS, sodium thiosulfate, antichlor
Genre: Clean
Purity: Pure without admixtures
Chemical formula: Na2S2O3 • 5H2O
Sodium thiosulphate (or thiosulphate = STS) is an antioxidant, fungicide and chelator of heavy metals. It is used in poisoning with cyanide and other toxic substances. In appropriate amounts, it dissolves calcification of soft tissues and removes excess calcium.
In traditional photography, sodium thiosulphate is used as a fixative - it forms stable complexes with silver ions, and thus after removal it removes unexposed silver bromide from the film. It is also often used in chemical analysis (iodometry), analytics in effective experiments. It is one of the antidotes for potassium cyanide.
Sodium thiosulphate is a white, odorless and crystalline solid (pentahydrate).
Chemical formula: Na2S2O3 * 5H2O
Melting point: 48.5 ° C
Sodium thiosulphate is used in the neutralization of chlorine and iodine solutions in water reservoirs, aquariums and ponds. Chlorine is a toxic element and its excess can be harmful to fish and shellfish.
Hydrogenated sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3 x 5H2O) melts at 48 ° C to form "crystalline water", and after melting it turns into a subcooled liquid state. As a result of throwing a sodium thiosulphate crystal into it or by means of a sudden impulse (impact) crystallizes with the release of heat (at about 45 ° C). This phenomenon is applicable in chemical heaters.
Sodium thiosulphate is also used for fungal infections. It is added to water in shower trays, bath tubs and shower cabins to get rid of ringworm. Sodium thiosulphate is often combined with salicylic acid in preparations intended for the treatment of wild dandruff.
