Sodium salicylate, C6H4 (OH) COONa (Natrium spiricum) is an organic chemical compound. It is a salt of salicylic acid, well soluble in water. This substance finds application in the form of anesthetic and antipyretic. It is also a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory preparation (NSAID) that induces apoptosis in cancer cells and necrosis. It is a potential replacement for aspirin in the case of organisms that are allergic to the above substance.
Sodium salicylate is used in pyrotechnics as an analytical reagent and in pharmacy. It acts as a solubilizer for other substances and also contributes to their solubility. Has anesthetic, antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, inhibits platelet aggregation, has a weakly calming effect, is highly antispasmodic, cholagogue and diuretic.
Sodium salicylate used externally in low concentrations (up to 0.5%) moisturizes the skin, and in high (up to 10%) it exfoliates it. It is used in iontophoresis, cosmetics, dermatology and ophthalmology.
