The use of sulfur
Sulfur is one of the most-used raw materials of the chemical industry. Sulfur and its compounds are used for the production of carbon disulphide and sulfuric acid (VI). It is used to vulcanize rubber (giving elasticity) as an ingredient in matches, gunpowder and fireworks. Sulfur is essential for all living organisms as a component of proteins. It is used for the production of dyes, as a specialist cement and for the treatment of skin diseases.
The use of sulfur in gardening and fruit-growing
• it plays an important role in the proper development of all types of plants. For those cultivars, it is a component contributing to the proper nutrition, and also plays a significant role in their protection. Sulfur is even more widely used as a protection agent than a nutrient shaping the size and quality of the crop.
• used before flowering, it inhibits the development of apple-apple rust and spider mites. It plays a significant role in the protection of apple trees, especially against the most serious disease - scab of apple trees.
• sulfur, like nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium, belongs to the macronutrients of plants. With its deficiency, the plants can not function properly, and the deficit symptoms resemble the symptoms of a lack of nitrogen. Sulfur helps plants absorb nitrogen from the soil.
Acidification with sulfur
An effective method of soil acidification may be the sowing of dusty or granulated sulfur. It works slowly and requires time to be effective. At small doses sown in autumn you can grow plants in the spring, but if it is necessary to use the maximum doses of sulfur (2.5-3.5 kg./10m2), you need to wait a minimum of one year. Sulfur can be used after planting, but a single dose should not exceed 50-100 g / 10 m2 of surface.
In order to maintain a low pH level in the cultivation of acidophilic plants, the use of compost, manure or alkaline mineral fertilizers (eg calcium salt, magnesium saltpetre, nitro-chalk) should be avoided, which increase the pH of the soil.
