Ammonium chloride (Latin: Ammonii chloridum; common name: salmiak, NH4Cl) is an inorganic chemical compound. Autumn is a salt of hydrochloric acid and ammonia, which occurs as a rare mineral – native salmiac.
Ammonium chloride is used mainly in the form of electrolyte in the dry cells of Leclanché – the most commonly used galvanic cells today. It is also used as an expectorant (component of anise drops) and a shampoo component.
Thermal decomposition of ammonium chloride was used to clean up soldering tips as well as metal surfaces. This substance is the oldest known ammonium salt – it was first obtained in ancient times. Currently, ammonium chloride is used in food products in the form of a leavening and preservative agent.
