Medicine and pharmacy
Propylene glycol is used in pharmacy as a substrate, i.e. a liquid that itself has no significant effect on the body, but in which the active ingredient can be distributed. This applies first of all to medicinal substances, which do not dissolve in water, but can be spread in a relatively neutral for the body of propylene glycol. In this way, propylene glycol can be used in the form of an oral preparation as well as a cream. In the latter case, it is topically applied to the skin.
In cosmetics
Propylene glycol can be used in the production of cosmetics as an excipient that gives the cosmetic the desired consistency of the emulsion and as a moisturizing ingredient in the skin. Propylene glycol can therefore be found in:
• toothpastes and mouthwash,
• hand hygiene products, or in general in cleaning products,
• as the main ingredient of the stick deodorant,
• in many other cosmetics. It is also used as an aroma carrier in fragrance oils and in massage oils.
