Sodium thiosulphate (or thiosulphate = STS) is an antioxidant, fungicide and heavy metal chelator. It is used in poisoning with cyanide and other toxic substances. It dissolves soft tissue calcification and removes excess calcium in appropriate amounts.
In traditional photography, this compound is used as a fixative, because it forms stable complexes with silver ions, thereby removing the unexposed silver bromide from the plate upon induction.
It is often used in chemical analysis (iodometry), in photography, analytics and used for effective experiments. It is one of the antidotes for potassium cyanide.
